Amy Butler Show & Tell Friday

Today is the Amy Butler Extravaganza over at Amy's blog.  You.  Do.  Not.  Want to miss this!

My contribution is my finished, pinwheel piecing for the Aloha quilt.  I knew I should have taken pictures yesterday when the sky was brilliantly blue and the sun a little higher...
but

that would have been way too easy and would have looked way too good!
LOL

When I started this quilt, the colors, the boldness and the wildness of the print made me think of Hawaii.  Robin Jones Gunn's book "Sister Chicks Do the Hula" has the most incredible description of the word "Aloha" and the Holy Spirit in it.  It has stuck with me all these years and it is an image I cherish.  If you get a chance to read this series of books, you will not be sorry!

So, the Aloha quilt was born.  Using a new fangled tool bought at a LQS, lots of head scratching, choosing fabrics, sewing and pressing.  There are a lot of hours involved in this piece.  Don't get me wrong, it was also a lot of fun, but just time consuming.  Okay.  I'm done whining now.

Here's my dilemma.  How to finish this off.  Colors?  Patterns?  Width?  So many unanswered questions keeping me from finishing this.  Which I really want to do.

Suggestions?

Greens?  Lime?  Pink?  Coral?  Yellow?
Help!

Heading off to quilt stores soccer games tomorrow and a canoe trip on Sunday with hubby love's compay.  His brother also works there, so we will be canoeing with some very special and much loved family too!

Hope your weekend is good, sunny and blessed!

  3. I am in love with that quilt!! What an amazing way to use large floral prints.
If I were you, I would definitely do a small border around the quilt about 2 to 3 inches maybe in the aqua color and then a large outer floral border. You could do a piano key outer border too. This is a tricky one I agree. Definitely frame it in though, so the eye has a place to rest.
Good luck! Can't wait to see how you do finish it.

  4. this is incredible. what an insane amount of work! it is gorgeous. i vote for the narrow border as well. maybe two rows of narrow border. you have so much going on in the actual quilt, the border might detract.

  5. I like it just like it is. No borders, maybe a turquoise or pink polka dot binding.

  8. Wow! I LOVE this!! I don't even think you need borders! How big is this? If it's big enough, just add a bright pink border that matches the large scale print you have in there. But whatever you decide it's going to be perfect! I really really really love this quilt!

  9. I think a narrow pink border (like 1") all the way around and then a pretty floral green border (like 4") would finish this off nicely. I love how it turned out. You did a beautiful job!

  10. The quilt is beautiful~so summery! I'd like an orangey-pink border to accent all of the aqua. Have a fun canoe trip!

  16. Goodness, Dee, I haven't a clue where you should go from here on this quilt. It's so pretty and fresh. I kindof lean toward picking up either the aqua or the pink, if you add borders, but HOW?

It may be as big as it needs to get, and then you can use it on that pretty couch of yours !

  18. It's a stunningly sewn stunner. I'll be on the lookout for it if you tell me when you are mailing it to me?

Love your colors. You could audition a simple border, picking out one of the colors in the floral (maybe the aqua since it reminds me of the ocean) or go bold and wild and do that chevron/coins design in a multi-color. Whatever you do it will be gorgeous. xoxo

  20. Dee, this is amazing! What a genius you are! I would just bind it. No borders necessary to my way of thinking -- unless you wanted to make it bigger. But it is perfection just as it is!
