Yesterday was our first day of school. I love that we start so much later than some of the other schools...we try to stretch summer out as long as we can. This is the long awaited, much commented on by the peanut gallery...Vacation Quilt.
Done in blues and greens to remind me this winter of the ocean surf at Pensacola and Destin, Florida. When it's icy, snowing and downright cold...I'm hoping we can snuggle up under it and psyche ourselves into thinking it's really much warmer and we can hear the waves gently lapping against the shore.
I'm still looking for a pattern, or inspiration for my hex quilt. I'm using Moda's 'Sanctuary' in purple and yellow...can't seem to find any anywhere. I would pick a popular color! Yikes. I bought this at a quilt store almost three hours away. I like the play of colors, the romanctic look of the fabric, the softness...hope I can find extra!
Here is an antique 'Grandmother's Garden' I found a picture of on the web. All the time and effort that went into a project like this. Makes me wonder where the faric came from? Mom's old dress. Dad's worn work shirts. Outgrown baby clothes. Feed sacks. Gifts from neighbors. They knew how to be thrifty in those days.
I am so in love with your Vacation Quilt!! It's gorgeous! I'm going to make one based on yours now because I love it so much! I have a couple charms packs of this great fabric, but had no idea what to do with them since I only have about 50 5" squares. I think I will cut them up and do 9-patches with a white center. You've inspired me! How big is each patch in the 9-patch? (I found your quilt (& then blog!)through the "Nothing But Scraps" Flickr group.) Anyway, the quilt is beautiful! And I love the quilting. I recently saw something similar and want to try it vs. stippling the whole quilt.
ReplyDeleteHi Jen! So glad to hear from you! You're kind words warm my heart. Charm packs for a quilt like this would be great! Each square is 3"x3"...finished out to 2 1/2"x 2 1/2". My quilt was based on redpepperquilts here...

I loved her bright colors! It's an easy pattern and she did such an excellent job! You'll have to share pictures when you get yours started! Hope to hear from you soon!
Thanks Dee! How funny..I just checked the link and a lot of the fabrics I have in mind for it are in that one! (Amy Butler Daisy Chain and Lotus (I think)) Well, I absolutely LOVE yours; one of the prettiest quilts I've seen! Again, I really like how you quilted it. Who knows when I'll get started on it due to having 2 little ones and a whole bunch of other projects I need to finish before Christmas! But I think this one will be one for me! I'll let you know when it's done!
ReplyDeleteAhhh...don't you love little tater tots! I can remember how long it would take me to do something...waiting for them to nap...getting everything out and organized on the table...just getting a couple of rows or snippets done and...naptime is over? LOL Thanks for your kind words. Redpepperquilts is a favorite of mine...she gets so much done! I'm impressed and jealous. Good luck with the Christmas projects! If you ever up for a fabric swap...I'm your man...er...girl!
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
